Inside a desk drawer, beneath a stack of receipts, I found an envelope containing a payment confirmation from a pediatric medical clinic.
Tony’s name appeared on the payment.
But the patient information wasn’t included.
I frowned.
We didn’t have children.
Why would Tony be paying bills at a pediatric clinic?
I checked our shared banking records.
There were two additional payments to the same clinic within the same month.
Then I noticed several transfers to another account, each labeled as a consulting expense.
Tony had always explained those transactions as work-related payments.
But the timing now made me suspicious.
I called the clinic and asked whether they could identify the patient connected to the payment.
The receptionist politely explained that patient information was confidential.
After hanging up, I sat at the kitchen table and studied the records again.
For years, Tony had insisted that we needed to be more financially prepared before having children.
