I looked at the photograph again.
At least I finally understood why Dakota had seemed so determined.
She wasn’t trying to become part of my husband’s life.
She was trying to make him acknowledge the daughter he’d kept hidden.
I turned toward Tony.
“There is one more thing I need to know.”
He looked up.
“Anything.”
“All those years when I asked whether we could have children, you kept telling me to wait.”
He went still.
“Was Lily the reason?”
His eyes filled.
And before he answered, I already knew.
“I felt guilty,” he whispered.
I stared at him.
“I thought if we had a baby, everything would become more complicated. I kept telling myself I needed to deal with Lily’s situation first.”
“For four years?”
“I didn’t know how to fix it.”
I looked at him in disbelief.
“So instead of telling me the truth, you decided for both of us.”
