Tony sat beside me.
“What do you want him to do?”
“Just show up. Even once.”
I looked at him.
“One day, I want a house full of children. I want family dinners and birthdays where everyone comes. I want a husband who actually means it when he says he’ll be home.”
Tony took my hand.
“You’ll have that, Jen.”
“You really think so?”
He smiled.
“I’ll make sure of it.”
I believed him.
We married when I was twenty.
Eight years later, we had a beautiful house, stable jobs, and what I believed was a happy marriage.
There was only one thing missing.
Children.
At first, Tony said he wanted us to settle into married life.
“Maybe next year,” he’d tell me.
Then he wanted to focus on earning a promotion.
After that, he wanted us to finish renovating the house.
Every time I brought up having a baby, there was another reason to wait.
