“We came because we’re concerned about you.”
“No, you didn’t.”
She blinked.
I had never spoken to her that way.
“You came because the house is gone.”
Her lips tightened.
“We were celebrating when you called. We were surrounded by people. Your father was under pressure.”
“I asked for a safe place to stay.”
“And we told you we needed time to think.”
“You told me to live with my choice.”
My father stepped closer.
“You are upset and heavily medicated. This is exactly why Garrett said we should wait before making serious decisions.”
I watched him.
“Did Garrett tell you to come here?”
“He is worried about you.”
“He put me here.”
My mother flinched.
“Charlotte, lower your voice.”
The absurdity of the instruction almost made me smile. Even with a damaged lung, I was apparently too loud for her comfort.
I reached for the trust statement Priya had left on the table.
