AFTER MY FAMILY ABANDONED ME IN INTENSIVE CARE, I WITHDREW ONE SIGNATURE—THEN DISCOVERED WHO HAD REALLY BEEN USING MY NAME

“No.”

“Do you believe he has access to your medical information?”

“I don’t know.”

“Your financial accounts?”

“Yes.”

“Your email?”

“Probably.”

She closed the notebook.

“We’re going to help you secure your communications. The hospital has restricted visitors, and your husband will not be permitted in without your consent.”

“He’ll come anyway.”

“Then he’ll be turned away.”

The certainty in her voice unsettled me. I was not accustomed to hearing Garrett’s wishes discussed as something that could simply be refused.

Detective Ruiz stood.

“One more thing. Your neighbor had a security camera facing the shared driveway. It captured your husband leaving the house after the ambulance arrived.”

I frowned.

“He followed me to the hospital.”

“Not immediately. He returned inside for eleven minutes first.”

A quiet chill moved through me.

“Why?”

“We don’t know yet.”

She slipped the notebook into her coat.

“But we intend to find out.”
