After my husband died, a nurse accidentally let it slip that a woman had been visiting him for several weeks before his death

But every document related to Arthur Vale had been removed.

A week later, someone followed her home from work.

Two days after that, a car tried to force her off the road.

Claire still has photographs of the damage.

I looked at her.

She nodded.

Without speaking, she took out her phone.

The photographs were real.

A dented driver’s-side door.

Broken mirror.

Scrapes along the side of a small blue car.

A second photograph showed Claire’s apartment.

Drawers emptied.

Papers covering the floor.

My throat tightened.

“Did you call the police?”“Of course.”

“And?”

“They said there wasn’t enough evidence to connect anything.”

“Connect it to who?”

Claire slowly put the phone away.

“The other heir.”

“What other heir?”

Before she could answer, there was movement in the hallway.

“Mommy?”

I froze.

Lily stood there in her pajamas, clutching the one-eared rabbit.

Her blonde hair was tangled around her face.
