After my husband died, a nurse accidentally let it slip that a woman had been visiting him for several weeks before his death

“And then?”

“And then the trust was discovered.”

“How much money are we talking about?”

Claire hesitated.

“Not eighty million.”

I frowned.

“You said Arthur’s estate was worth eighty million.”

“His personal estate.”“Claire.”

She looked me directly in the eyes.

“The trust controls thirty-two percent of Vale Maritime.”

“So?”

“The company was valued last year at approximately 1.4 billion dollars.”

I forgot how to breathe.

“Jack’s share—”

“Would’ve been worth more than two hundred million.”

I stood so quickly the coffee table shook.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“No.”

My voice came out as a whisper.

“People don’t just discover two hundred million dollars.”

“Jack did.”

“And then he died.”

Claire said nothing.

I looked at her.

Really looked at her.

“His cancer.”

Her expression changed.

“Don’t.”

“What?”

“Don’t think that.”

“Was he already sick before you contacted him?”“Yes.”

“You’re sure?”

“He had symptoms.”

“That’s not what I asked.”
