After my husband died, a nurse accidentally let it slip that a woman had been visiting him for several weeks before his death

He had been hiding us from the money.

I looked at Claire.

“Who knows?”

“About the children?”

“Yes.”

“Arthur’s attorney.”

“Richard?”

Her silence answered me.

I closed my eyes.

“How long has he known?”

A sound came from outside.

A car door.

Both of us froze.

Claire crossed the room so quickly it startled me.

She killed the lamp.

“What are you doing?”

“Stay away from the window.”

My heartbeat began pounding in my ears.

“Claire—”

“Someone followed me here.”

My blood ran cold.

“You knew?”

“I wasn’t sure.”

“You brought them to my house?”

“I circled the neighborhood three times.”

“You brought them to my children!”

“I’m sorry.”

Headlights swept across the living-room wall.

Then disappeared.

I moved toward the curtain.

Claire grabbed my arm.

“Don’t.”

We stood in darkness.

The baby kicked again.Down the hallway, Lily slept.

A minute passed.

Then another.

Nothing happened.
