After my husband died, a nurse accidentally let it slip that a woman had been visiting him for several weeks before his death

I stared at it.

The envelope was thicker than the first.

I didn’t take it.

“What is it?”

“Documents.”

“What kind?”

“Legal documents.”

My heart began pounding.

Claire placed the envelope on the table.

Then she said something I never could have imagined.

“Your husband wasn’t poor.”I almost smiled.

The statement was so absurd that I thought grief had affected her mind.

“Jack and I had forty-three dollars in our account when he went into the hospital.”

“I know.”

“We were behind on the mortgage.”

“I know.”

“I sold my grandmother’s wedding ring.”

“I know that too.”

That made me angry.

I stood.

“How do you know?”

“Jack told me.”

“So he was discussing our finances with a stranger while I was selling everything we owned to keep him alive?”

Her face tightened.

“I wasn’t a stranger to him by then.”

“You were to me.”
