Every year, my husband and his family blamed me for “ruining” Christmas. This year, I finally stopped showing up—and stopped paying for the celebration they expected me to cover. By 6:30 p.m., my phone started ringing over and over. The same people who said I spoiled the holiday were suddenly desperate to know where I was and why nothing was going according to plan.

I turned my head toward him.

He was smiling at the screen.

I had never seen the house he was talking about.

I had not agreed to book anything.

“Actually,” I said, “I’m not handling the booking this year.”

The conversation stopped in pieces.

Ryan stopped laughing.

Beth looked toward her screen.

Marcy’s youngest son walked past holding a cereal bowl, realized something had changed, and backed out of view.

Colleen leaned closer to her camera.

“What do you mean?”

Neil looked at me.

I could feel the warning in his expression.

Not anger yet.

Confusion.
