Every year, my husband and his family blamed me for “ruining” Christmas. This year, I finally stopped showing up—and stopped paying for the celebration they expected me to cover. By 6:30 p.m., my phone started ringing over and over. The same people who said I spoiled the holiday were suddenly desperate to know where I was and why nothing was going according to plan.

We were financially stable.

The number upset me because of what it represented.

More than seventy thousand dollars.

And that did not include the time.

The lists.

The calls.

The cooking.

The mornings I woke before everyone else.

The nights I loaded dishwashers while everybody played cards.

I stared at the total and thought about the photograph of me carrying the trash bag.

Neil walked in.

He saw the spreadsheet.
