Every year, my husband and his family blamed me for “ruining” Christmas. This year, I finally stopped showing up—and stopped paying for the celebration they expected me to cover. By 6:30 p.m., my phone started ringing over and over. The same people who said I spoiled the holiday were suddenly desperate to know where I was and why nothing was going according to plan.

“How do they work?”

“You help people when you can.”

“I agree.”

“Then what is this?”

“Me deciding when I can.”

We did not resolve it.

Which is how we arrived at the family video call.

Neil announced the eight-bedroom Boone house as if my answer had never existed.

So I corrected him.

After my comment about paying what people could afford, the call became awkward fast.

Marcy spoke first.

“So what does that mean exactly?”

“It means we choose a place after we know what each household can contribute.”

Ryan said, “We’ve never done it that way.”

“I know.”
