Every year, my husband and his family blamed me for “ruining” Christmas. This year, I finally stopped showing up—and stopped paying for the celebration they expected me to cover. By 6:30 p.m., my phone started ringing over and over. The same people who said I spoiled the holiday were suddenly desperate to know where I was and why nothing was going according to plan.

I took a breath.

“Frank wanted the family together.”

“Yes.”

“He did not say it had to happen in an eight-bedroom luxury rental.”

Colleen looked away.

The call ended twenty minutes later without a house.

Neil closed my laptop harder than necessary.

“You embarrassed me.”

I stared at him.

“How?”

“You made it sound like I’ve been freeloading off you for sixteen years.”

“I didn’t mention you.”

“You didn’t have to.”

“Marcy thought we split the rental.”

He turned away.
