Every year, my husband and his family blamed me for “ruining” Christmas. This year, I finally stopped showing up—and stopped paying for the celebration they expected me to cover. By 6:30 p.m., my phone started ringing over and over. The same people who said I spoiled the holiday were suddenly desperate to know where I was and why nothing was going according to plan.

Ryan looked down.

Marcy folded a napkin between her fingers.

Colleen’s face tightened.

“Are we doing this on Christmas Eve?”

Neil said, “No. We should’ve done it years ago.”

Nobody applauded.

Nobody cried.

That was better.

Ryan got up and started setting the table.

Marcy told her kids to clear the living room.

Beth asked what still needed cooking.

Colleen sat quietly for several minutes.

Then she asked me, “Do you want me to peel potatoes?”
