Every year, my husband and his family blamed me for “ruining” Christmas. This year, I finally stopped showing up—and stopped paying for the celebration they expected me to cover. By 6:30 p.m., my phone started ringing over and over. The same people who said I spoiled the holiday were suddenly desperate to know where I was and why nothing was going according to plan.

“Yes.”

Another pause.

I looked at the fourteen faces on the screen.

“For the first time, I think we should decide what everyone can actually afford before anyone reserves anything.”

Ryan gave a short laugh.

Not cruel.

More surprised.

“Are we doing a budget meeting now?”

“Yes,” I said.

That ended the laughter.

My name is Leah Benton. I was fifty-one that Christmas, and I had been married to Neil for sixteen years.

I worked as a procurement manager for a public university, which meant people assumed my job involved shopping.

It did not.
