I looked at Michael.
His face had lost all color.
“And you never told me?”
“It mattered when we got married.”
“I know.”
“It mattered when I told you I was pregnant.”
He looked at me then.
“I thought maybe the doctors had been wrong.”
The words hit me like cold water.
“So you knew this whole time?”
He nodded.
I stood so quickly that the chair scraped across the floor.
The doctor raised one hand.
“Before either of you assume anything, I need you to hear me out.”
I stopped.
She clicked through the old file again.
“There’s something strange here.”
Michael looked up.
“What?”
“The identification details don’t match completely.”
She pointed to the screen.
“The date of birth is yours. The name is yours. But this document lists a different middle initial.”
Michael frowned.
