I didn’t know what to tell him.
So I waited.
After a while, he sat on the hood of his car.
“Do you remember when we were nineteen and I broke up with Jessica?”
I frowned.
“Which time?”
He gave me a weak smile.
“The time I said I’d never fall in love again.”
“You ate an entire pizza and watched three romantic comedies.”
“Two.”
“Three. You cried during the last one.”
“I had something in my eye.”
“Both eyes?”
He shook his head, laughing despite himself.
Then his smile disappeared.
“You told me something that night. You said loving someone doesn’t mean you get to keep them.”
I remembered.
I had said it because Daniel was devastated, and I wanted to make him feel better.
Now those words had come back to stand between us.
“I hated you for saying that,” he admitted. “But I think I’m starting to understand it.”
