Daniel knew.
Karen’s sister knew.
A handful of close friends knew.
Michael, however, learned about us in the least peaceful way possible.
He showed up at Second Chapter on a Wednesday afternoon.
Karen was arranging a display near the front window when the bell above the door rang.
She looked up.
Her expression changed immediately.
“Michael.”
He walked inside wearing an expensive coat and the familiar expression he used whenever he wanted to appear reasonable.
“We need to talk.”
“If this concerns the divorce, contact my attorney.”
“It concerns our son.”
Karen set down the book in her hand.
“What about Daniel?”
“He tells me you’re seeing Alex Bennett.”
She said nothing.
Michael’s jaw tightened.
“So it’s true.”
“It’s my personal life.”
“He’s ten years younger than you.”
“I’m aware of our ages.”
“He was practically raised in our house.”
“And now he’s an adult.”
Michael glanced around the bookstore.
