My parents stepped out.
Their coats were perfect.
Their expressions controlled.
Mom hurried toward us.
“How is Gracie?”
The doctor looked between all of us.
“She is stable.”
My knees nearly gave way.
“The babies are both breathing independently. Grace remains weak, but the immediate danger has passed.”
I began sobbing.
Noah cried silently.
“She made it,” I whispered.
Mom opened her arms.
“Oh, thank goodness.”
I stepped away.
“Do not touch me.”
Her expression changed.
“What?”
I raised the contract.
The color drained from both my parents’ faces.
“You Planned to Send Her Away”
“You planned to send her away.”
Mom’s mouth opened.
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand every line.”
Dad’s face hardened.
“This is not the place.”
“It became the place when your daughter nearly lost her life while her husband carried evidence of what you did.”
Mom pointed at Noah.
“He accepted money to marry her.”
