My husband hammered a nail into our 7-year-old daughter’s foot to force her to study instead of running, ignoring her bloody screams. When my father burst in to save her, my husband brutally smashed the heavy hammer into his head, leaving him bleeding on the floor.

For months, my husband had been turning ordinary childhood behavior into something shameful. He had made our daughter believe that running, playing, and making mistakes were reasons to fear him.

And he had taught her to keep those fears secret.

I kissed her forehead.

“You never have to hide something like that from me again. I believe you.”

She began to cry.

“I thought you would be mad.”

“Never for telling me the truth.”

I held her until she fell asleep.

Then I walked into the hallway, found an empty chair, and finally let myself cry.

Not because my marriage was ending.

Because my daughter had been frightened in her own home, and I hadn’t understood how frightened she was.

I promised myself that night that I would never ask her to protect the appearance of our family at the expense of her safety again.

At three in the morning, a nurse came to find me.
