My husband hammered a nail into our 7-year-old daughter’s foot to force her to study instead of running, ignoring her bloody screams. When my father burst in to save her, my husband brutally smashed the heavy hammer into his head, leaving him bleeding on the floor.

A home where mistakes were opportunities to learn.

A home where love didn’t come with threats.

One Saturday morning, I found her sitting at the kitchen table, working on a school assignment.

She looked up when I entered.

“Mommy, I made a mistake.”

I put down the groceries.

“That’s okay. Let’s see if we can figure it out.”

She showed me the page.

We worked through the problem together, and when she finally understood it, she grinned.

“I got it!”

“You did.”

She jumped up and ran toward the backyard.

I watched her go, sunlight spilling across the kitchen floor.

For a moment, I remembered the little girl who had once been afraid to leave her desk.

Then I looked at the open door.

She was outside, laughing.

And nobody was telling her to stop.

That evening, she sat beside me on the couch while we watched a cartoon. Halfway through the show, she rested her head on my shoulder.
