His mouth opened.
“The watch you told reporters you bought to celebrate it?”
She looked at his wrist.
“I bought that too.”
A ripple of shocked laughter moved through the room.
Grant stared down at the watch.
Then Seraphina delivered the blow that mattered most.
“Holloway Meridian’s debt restructuring five years ago came from Bellamy.”
He looked up.
“The Tampa financing came from Bellamy.”
“No.”
“The emergency credit facility came from Bellamy.”
“Sera—”
“The land option in Fort Lauderdale came through a Bellamy subsidiary.”
Grant shook his head.
“The New York pension-fund introduction?”
“Mine.”
“The hospital network?”
“Mine.”
“The Chicago investors?”
“Mine.”
Grant’s shoulders seemed to collapse one inch at a time.
Seraphina’s voice softened.
“Your business was not keeping me in luxury, Grant.
My business was keeping yours alive.”
This time, nobody whispered.
The truth was too complete.
Grant stepped backward.
Delaney stood.
“We should leave.”
