The auditorium was full.
I held the guidon in both hands.
Then I set aside my prepared speech.
“Leadership is not proven when a room is easy,” I told the unit. “It is proven when fear arrives disguised as love, concern, or humiliation.”
No one moved.
“This command will be disciplined, accurate, and humane. We will protect the mission. We will also protect one another from abuse of authority, whether it comes from outside these gates or within them.”
I paused.
“No one earns control over another person by calling it love.”
The command sergeant major stood first.
Then the officers.
Then every person in the auditorium.
By evening, the speech was online.
This time, Daniel did not control the image.
At 2100, Lenora called.
“The full bedroom footage was reviewed this afternoon.”
“And?”
“Daniel’s attorney requested a private meeting with prosecutors within twenty minutes.”
His story had collapsed.
Then Lenora told me the hidden drives connected Daniel and Marjorie to Captain Lyra Mason.
