“Marriage makes it ours.”
“Forgery may make it evidence.”
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But after years of intelligence work, I knew what calculation looked like.
I walked past them.
Twenty minutes after I arrived at Fort Ashbourne, two military police officers entered my new office.
General Warren Vale was sitting across from me, reviewing the transition schedule.
The taller officer removed his cap.
“Colonel Cross, a man identifying himself as your husband attempted to enter the installation.”
“Daniel Mercer?”
“Yes, ma’am. He presented federal credentials and claimed he had authorization to remove you on urgent family business.”
“Were the credentials valid?”
“No, ma’am.”
Counterfeit.
After the clippers, the threats, and Daniel’s reaction when I mentioned forgery, the word felt less like a surprise than confirmation.
“Where is he?”
“In custody near the security office. He became agitated when the gate guards questioned him, but he did not become physically aggressive.”
