“Fair ended when I woke up beneath a pair of clippers.”
“I didn’t know she would go that far.”
“You stood in the doorway.”
“I was angry.”
“You were afraid.”
His eyes narrowed.
“Afraid of what?” I continued. “My promotion? My rank? My name on an office door?”
“You changed.”

“You think this is only about money,” he whispered. “You have no idea what she can do.”
“Your mother?”
Daniel glanced at the camera.
“I cannot discuss it here.”
The federal investigator beside me, Special Agent Dana Pierce, stepped forward.
“This is your opportunity to cooperate.”
Daniel laughed without humor.
“You think badges make you powerful? You have no idea how many badges Marjorie has collected.”
“What does that mean?” I asked.
