“On March eighteenth, eleven years ago, David Callahan’s contracting business defaulted on three major obligations. By May, the house was in danger of foreclosure. Brent attempted to arrange refinancing, but his credit and several undisclosed liabilities made him ineligible. Margaret contacted Julia privately.”
My mother snapped, “That is family business.”
Evelyn looked at her over the rim of her glasses.
“Yes. And you made it Julia’s burden.”
Brent’s jaw tightened.
Evelyn continued. “Julia paid the arrears. Then, on the advice of counsel, she purchased the mortgage through Rosegate Holdings, LLC, in order to protect her children’s future and prevent further misuse of funds. Since then, she has paid the taxes when they were late, covered two emergency repairs, and stopped a lien that would have forced this property into sale.”
My father’s hands covered his mouth.
Brent said, “She didn’t do that for free.”
