On New Year’s Eve, mom gave presents to every grandchild except mine, so I quietly left and said never to invite us again—then at 6:00 a.m. on January 1, my family’s “new year’s gift” arrived at their door.

Then Aunt Denise sent a heart.

Then Cousin Laura wrote:

Thank you for telling the truth.

Then Cassandra wrote:

Tyler apologized because he knew what happened was wrong. I should have spoken up too. I am sorry.

Brent left the group.

My mother did not respond.

But an hour later, she called me seventeen times.

I answered none of them.

Because truth had finally entered the family.

And like light in a neglected room, it revealed dust on everything.

PART 6

The Room Where My Mother Finally Ran Out of Lies

By mid-January, my mother had stopped calling me and started calling everyone else.

That was how I knew she was frightened.

My mother did not seek comfort. She recruited witnesses.

She called Aunt Denise to say I was unstable. Aunt Denise asked whether it was true she had hidden Grandma Rose’s gifts. My mother hung up.

She called Cousin Laura to say I had always resented Brent. Laura asked whether Brent had really tried to use Dad’s signature. My mother said people were jealous of successful men.
