Presenter forgets she was on live and her whole…See more

Sometimes, the mistake is not that the presenter completely forgets the cameras exist. Instead, the presenter may believe that the microphone has been switched off, that the segment has ended, or that the director has already moved to another shot.

These are different situations, but they can produce similar results: a comment or reaction that was never intended for the audience becomes part of the broadcast.

Modern television equipment makes such moments particularly complicated. A presenter may no longer be speaking directly to the main camera while still being audible to viewers. A wide shot may remain on screen while the presenter assumes that attention has moved elsewhere. In some studios, microphones can continue transmitting even when a person believes the conversation is private.

The result can be an awkward surprise for everyone involved.

When the Cameras Keep Rolling

One of the most important features of live television is that the audience does not always see the same thing the presenter sees.
