The Face of Corruption

Part 3: The Badge

Seeing her reach into her bag, Tom’s hand instinctively dropped to his holster. “Hands where I can see them! Now!” he yelled, trying to assert dominance.

Sarah slowly pulled her hand out, but she wasn’t holding a weapon. Wrapped in her palm was a heavy, gold shield. She flipped it open, holding it inches from Tom’s face.

The gold badge gleamed in the afternoon sun: New York City Police Department — Captain.

The smirk instantly vanished from Tom’s face. The blood drained from his cheeks so fast he looked like he had seen a ghost. The two officers behind him froze mid-stride, their expressions turning from arrogant amusement to sheer terror.

“Captain Sarah Johnson,” she announced, her voice echoing with absolute authority. “Internal Affairs has been looking into reports of extortion in this sector for three months, Sergeant Davis. I didn’t expect to catch you in the act on my way to a family wedding, but here we are.”

Tom swallowed hard, his voice suddenly losing all its bark. “C-Captain… I… this is a misunderstanding. We had a report of a vehicle matching this description—”

“Quiet,” Sarah ordered, cutting him off instantly.

Part 4: The Internal Affairs Call

“Give the driver his license and registration. Now,” Sarah commanded.

Tom’s hands shook as he handed the paperwork back to a stunned Mike, who was staring at Sarah wide-eyed, unable to believe his luck.

Sarah pulled out her personal cell phone and dialed a direct line. “This is Captain Johnson, badge number 4412. I need a transport unit and an Internal Affairs representative at my location immediately. I have a Sergeant Tom Davis and two subordinates caught in flagrante for extortion, assault, and abuse of power. Have their badges suspended effective immediately.”

Hearing those words, one of Tom’s junior officers panicked. “Captain, please! We were just following the Sergeant’s orders! He forces us to do this, he takes a cut of everything!”

“Shut up, Miller!” Tom barked, though his voice lacked any real power now. He turned to Sarah, trying to appeal to her. “Captain, please. We’re on the same team. Don’t ruin my career over a taxi driver.”

Sarah looked at him with pure disgust. “You wear the same uniform I do, but we are not on the same team. You are a criminal with a badge.”

Part 5: The Final Chapter

Within ten minutes, three unmarked Internal Affairs vehicles arrived, sirens muted but lights flashing. The IA investigators didn’t offer Tom or his cronies any special treatment; they stripped them of their service weapons and badges right there on the side of the highway, loading them into the back of a transport van in handcuffs.

Sarah walked over to Mike, who was leaning against his taxi, tears of relief filling his eyes.

“I don’t know how to thank you, Captain,” Mike said, his voice trembling. “You saved my livelihood. You saved my family.”

“You don’t have to thank me, Mike. You did nothing wrong,” Sarah said gently, handing him her professional card. “If anyone ever harasses you on this route again, you call this number directly. I’ll make sure you’re taken care of.”

Sarah got back into the rear seat of the taxi. The ride resumed, but the atmosphere was completely changed. Mike kept looking at her in the rearview mirror with profound respect.

An hour later, they arrived at the wedding venue. Sarah paid Mike for the ride and added a generous tip. As she stepped out, looking beautiful and elegant in her red dress, she finally smiled. She was late for the rehearsal dinner, but she had accomplished a vital piece of police work. She had reminded the city that no one—not even a man with a badge—is above the law.
