“Logan stayed with me for several weeks,” Robert said.
“Why?”
“He wasn’t doing well.”
My anger faltered.
“What does that mean?”
“He wasn’t sleeping. He had lost weight. He was having panic attacks.”
I closed my eyes briefly.
I had seen Logan anxious before.
Never like that.
“He began seeing a therapist,” Robert continued. “He found work nearby. He started saving money. He kept saying he wanted to come back to you when he could prove he wouldn’t run again.”
“That’s not how trust works.”
“I told him that.”
My eyes opened.
Robert gave a tired smile.
“Repeatedly.”
Something inside me loosened despite myself.
“You told him?”
“I said he was treating forgiveness like an examination he could study for. I told him there was no perfect speech that would erase what happened.”
“And what did he say?”
“That he knew.”
The nurse gently reminded me that Ethan’s examination was waiting.
