THE FACE THAT BROUGHT A FAMILY BACK TOGETHER: A SECOND CHANCE AT TRUST

“So you proved your reliability by disappearing?”

“I know.”

“At least you understand the irony.”

“I’ve had seven months to study it.”

I almost smiled again.

Almost.

The repair technician arrived soon afterward.

The problem turned out to be minor.

While he worked, Logan stood near the kitchen.

Ethan began fussing.

I picked him up.

Logan watched.

“Do you want to hold him?”

His head lifted.

He looked genuinely startled.

“Are you sure?”

“No.”

That was the truth.

“But I think you should.”

He washed his hands twice.

Then sat carefully on the sofa.

I placed Ethan in his arms.

Logan looked down at our son.

Everything in his face softened.

“Hi,” he whispered.

Ethan opened his eyes.

Logan laughed quietly.

“I’m your dad.”

My throat tightened.

He looked at me.

“If you let me be.”

I shook my head.

“That part isn’t mine to give you.”
