“What question?”
Robert paused.
“He wants to know whether I think you would be willing to meet with both of us.”
“Why?”
“Because there is one final part of this family story neither of us has told you.”
My stomach tightened.
“I thought the adoption was the final part.”
“So did Logan.”
“What changed?”
“While going through Margaret’s papers last week, I found a letter.”
“From whom?”
Robert’s answer came quietly.
“From Elizabeth.”

PART 4 (The End) THE FACE THAT BROUGHT A FAMILY BACK TOGETHER
Three days later, Logan and Robert sat across from me at Marisol’s kitchen table.
I had chosen neutral territory.
Not my apartment.
Not Robert’s house.
Not Logan’s new place.
Marisol had volunteered her dining room, her coffee maker, and—according to her—her ability to disappear while still hearing everything important.
She took Ethan into the living room.
“If anyone needs me,” she announced, “I am absolutely not listening.”
