THE FACE THAT BROUGHT A FAMILY BACK TOGETHER: A SECOND CHANCE AT TRUST

The letter contained ordinary worries.

Money.

Sleep.

Whether she would be a good mother.

Whether Logan’s father, Thomas, would eventually become more involved.

Then came the paragraph that silenced all three of us.

Robert read aloud.

“Margaret keeps telling me I don’t have to do this alone. I know that. But there is a difference between being alone and standing on your own feet while knowing somebody will catch you if you stumble.”

Robert stopped briefly.

Then continued.

“If anything ever happens to me, I know you and Robert would love this child as fiercely as I do. But promise me something. Don’t raise him to believe strong people never become frightened. Tell him courage isn’t the absence of fear. It is choosing what matters while fear is still sitting beside you.”

Logan lowered his head.

Nobody spoke.

Robert continued reading silently for a while, then handed the final page to Logan.
