Nobody touched the glasses of water I’d prepared.
I placed Dakota’s note beside the clinic receipts.
Then I looked at her.
“Who is the child?”
Dakota turned toward Tony.
“Tell her.”
He closed his eyes.
“Dakota, please.”
She shook her head.
“You’ve had four years.”
My stomach dropped.
“Four years?”
Tony stared at the table.
Dakota took a breath.
“Jennifer, five years ago, Tony was working on a project out of town.”
I remembered.
He’d spent several months traveling for work.
Dakota continued.
“During that project, he met my older sister, Emily.”
I turned toward my husband.
He wouldn’t look at me.
“They became involved,” Dakota said quietly. “It lasted a few months.”
I felt the room shift around me.
I looked at Tony.
“You were having an affair?”
He nodded.
I stared at him.
“You came home every weekend.”
“I know.”
“You slept beside me and talked about our future.”
