“For what?”
“Garrett said there was a deadline. He said you had already approved the transfer but forgot to submit it.”
“Which transfer?”
“I don’t know.”
“Daniel.”
“I swear, I don’t know. It was an authorization packet. There were multiple documents.”
“When?”
“Last summer.”
That was when my grandmother’s trust had issued the loan to Bellweather.
I closed my eyes.
“Did you read them?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because Garrett said it was routine.”
“Garrett says everything is routine.”
“I know that now.”
His voice cracked on the final word.
I thought of my little brother following me through our grandmother’s garden, carrying a jar for fireflies. I thought of him sitting beside me at my wedding, joking that I was the only person who could make Garrett look nervous.
“When did you find out?” I asked.
“Two weeks ago.”
“Find out what?”
“That he was using your credentials.”
