My hand tightened around the phone.
“How?”
“I saw the audit logs.”
“What were you doing in the audit logs?”
“Looking for a payment. One of our contractors hadn’t been paid, and Garrett blamed accounting. But the payment had been redirected.”
“To where?”
“A consulting company.”
“Which company?”
“Larkspur Advisory.”
The name meant nothing to me.
“Who owns it?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then why are you afraid?”
Daniel’s answer came in a whisper.
“Because every redirected payment was approved from your account.”
For a long moment, I heard only the monitor beside me.
“How many payments?”
“Thirty-one.”
The room narrowed.
“How much money?”
“Nearly four million dollars.”
I could not speak.
“Charlotte, I think he’s preparing to blame you.”
The sentence did not surprise me.
What surprised me was how completely I believed it.
“Where are you now?” I asked.
“Outside.”
“Outside where?”
“The hospital.”
I looked toward the glass wall.
