“Your brother.”
Daniel arrived that afternoon.
He looked like he had not slept.
The moment he entered, he looked at me.
“I’m sorry.”
Those two words carried years of guilt.
I waited.
“Tell me everything.”
He sat down.
“When Garrett hired me, I thought it was because he believed in me.”
His laugh was bitter.
“I was stupid.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
He looked at his hands.
“I wanted his approval.”
I understood.
Because I had wanted it too.
“He started giving me responsibilities. Access. Information.”
“What kind of information?”
“Financial.”
“Why?”
“Because he said I was being prepared for leadership.”
I looked at him.
“And what did you find?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Evidence that he had been moving money.”
“How much did you know?”
“Not everything.”
“Daniel.”
He looked up.
“I knew enough to be afraid.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
His eyes filled.
“Because he showed me something.”
“What?”
