AFTER MY FAMILY ABANDONED ME IN INTENSIVE CARE, I WITHDREW ONE SIGNATURE—THEN DISCOVERED WHO HAD REALLY BEEN USING MY NAME

“A recording.”

My heart dropped.

“Of what?”

“You.”

The room went quiet.

“He had edited conversations. Made it sound like you approved everything.”

I stared.

“He was preparing.”

Daniel nodded.

“He said if anyone questioned him, he would prove you were involved.”

A terrible understanding formed.

Garrett was not simply stealing.

He was building a story.

A story where I was the villain.

“Why tell me now?”

Daniel looked toward the window.

“Because I found something yesterday.”

“What?”

He reached into his bag and pulled out a small envelope.

My name was written across the front.

The handwriting was familiar.

Too familiar.

My grandmother’s.

“I found it hidden in an old company archive box.”

My hands trembled as I took it.

The envelope was sealed.

On the front were four words:

For Charlotte. When you know.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a single page.

Only one sentence.

Charlotte, the woman who raised you is not the woman who gave birth to you.
