After my husband died, a nurse accidentally let it slip that a woman had been visiting him for several weeks before his death

After the DNA tests, the attorney confirmed everything.

The trust would’ve passed to Jack once his identity was verified.

But by then, Jack already knew he was dying.

He refused to accept a distribution.

I read that sentence twice.

Then fury exploded through me.

“He did what?”

Claire looked down.

“He refused it.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“We were losing everything!”

“I know.”

“I was six months pregnant!”

“I know.”

“I sold my jewelry!”

“I know.”

“Our daughter heard us arguing about bills!”

“I know.”

“And he refused millions of dollars?”

Claire flinched.“He had a reason.”

“There is no reason!”

My voice cracked so loudly that I was afraid I had woken Lily.

I looked toward the hallway.

Her bedroom door remained closed.

I lowered my voice.

“No reason in this world makes that okay.”

Claire nodded slowly.

“I said almost the exact same thing.”
