After my husband died, a nurse accidentally let it slip that a woman had been visiting him for several weeks before his death

Not fully.

But enough.

“No.”

“Emma—”

“No.”

“The trust passes to Arthur’s surviving children first.”

“Jack was alive eight months ago.”

“Yes.”

“So why didn’t he get it?”

“Because nobody knew where he was.”

I stared at her.

“Arthur had spent decades searching.”

“Searching for Jack?”

“For both of us.”

“And you expect me to believe he couldn’t find two children?”

“We weren’t using the names we were born with.”

Claire’s voice softened.

“Jack was born Jonathan Vale.”

I felt as if I had been punched.

Jack.

My Jack.

Jonathan Vale.

She continued.

“Our mother changed everything when she ran. She gave him up under another surname. I went through three foster families and eventually took the last family’s name.”I picked up Jack’s letter again.

Some of the pieces were beginning to fit.

Not enough.

But some.

Claire found our father’s estate attorney.
