Every year, my husband and his family blamed me for “ruining” Christmas. This year, I finally stopped showing up—and stopped paying for the celebration they expected me to cover. By 6:30 p.m., my phone started ringing over and over. The same people who said I spoiled the holiday were suddenly desperate to know where I was and why nothing was going according to plan.

He looked at me sharply.

“What does that mean?”

“It means you don’t get to blame this on being one of the guys.”

We drove another mile before he spoke.

“You do like hosting.”

“Yes.”

“You like planning.”

“Yes.”

“You’ve always said Christmas matters to you.”

“Yes.”

“So where exactly was the lie?”

I looked at him.

“The part where you treated my wanting to be included like a financial weakness you could count on.”

His face hardened.
