Every year, my husband and his family blamed me for “ruining” Christmas. This year, I finally stopped showing up—and stopped paying for the celebration they expected me to cover. “That isn’t what I meant.”

“It’s what I heard.”

“You heard ten seconds of a conversation.”

“I heard enough.”

He shook his head.

“What do you want me to say?”

I answered honestly.

“I don’t know yet.”

For the next week, nothing dramatic happened.

We watched a documentary on Wednesday night.

But something in me had shifted.
