Five days after my Csection my husband handed me twelve dollars

And I grew up finding out what that name does to a room, and when I met Bryn I wanted to be liked by somebody who did not know it.

And my father said one thing to me about that, in 2021, in a kitchen.

“Make sure you know who he is before you tell him who you are.”

And on that bus I understood it for the first time as a warning rather than a piece of advice.

And I rang the number he gave me in 2014 and told me to use if I ever actually needed it, which I never had.

He picked up on the second ring.

“Etta?”

“Dad. I need help.”

And his voice did something. “Where are you.”

“On a bus.”

And there was about four seconds of nothing.

And I told him the whole of it — the

surgery, the car, the twelve dollars, the bag on the pavement, Otis and me outside that hospital.
