Perhaps we could build something new.
Not a replacement for the old family.
Something different.
Something honest.
Something that allowed everyone to heal at their own pace.
The Divorce Was Final, but the Story Wasn’t Over
Karen and Michael’s divorce became final six months later.
There was no dramatic courtroom confrontation, no last-minute confession, and no emotional speech in which Michael suddenly understood what he had lost.
There were documents, signatures, legal fees, and a final meeting with their attorneys.
When Karen called me afterward, she was sitting in her car outside the courthouse.
“It’s done,” she said.
I closed my eyes.
“How do you feel?”
She was quiet for a moment.
“Strange.”
“Happy?”
“Partly.”
“Sad?”
“Partly.”
“Relieved?”
She laughed softly.
“Very.”
I heard her take a breath.
“I thought I would feel like I was losing something today.”
“And do you?”
“No.”
Her voice grew stronger.
“I think I’m finally putting something down.”
