I smiled.
“Then what happens now?”
She looked through the windshield at the busy street beyond the courthouse.
“Now I go back to my bookstore.”
“That sounds like a good plan.”
“And tonight?”
I waited.
“Tonight, I would like to have dinner with my boyfriend.”
I grinned.
“Boyfriend?”
“Unless the position has been filled.”
“I can be available.”
“Wonderful. Seven o’clock.”
She hung up.
I sat there smiling at my phone like an idiot.
Then I realized I had never actually taken Karen on a proper first date.
Our first evening together had involved a broken car, a confession about a collapsing marriage, and coffee so terrible it could probably strip paint.
It seemed only fair to do better this time.
I booked a table at a small restaurant near the river. I bought flowers. I even wore a shirt that Daniel had once described as proof that I was capable of dressing like an adult.
