“Your father’s firm had already prepared guardianship papers.”
“They wanted to send her away.”
“They called it planning for her future.”
“And you?”
“They offered me the marriage agreement instead.”
“Why?”
“Because they believed that once Gracie had a husband, he would become responsible for everything they did not want to handle.”
I felt sick.
“And you accepted.”
“I signed because I loved her.”
“You signed their contract.”
“I refused every clause that would have allowed them to continue controlling her.”
He looked directly at me.
“I hired another attorney. The money went into an independent account under Gracie’s name.”
He pointed at the document.
“Signing also gave me legal standing to challenge any attempt to move her into Silvercrest Residence.”
I stared at him.
“So you signed the page that stopped them from sending her away.”
“Yes.”
“But you still took the deal.”
“Yes.”
“You could have told me.”
