My husband hammered a nail into our 7-year-old daughter’s foot to force her to study instead of running, ignoring her bloody screams. When my father burst in to save her, my husband brutally smashed the heavy hammer into his head, leaving him bleeding on the floor.

He put the hammer down and immediately changed his voice.

“This got out of control,” he said. “Nobody needs to make this worse.”

I stared at him. Our daughter was injured. My father was unconscious on the floor. And my husband was already trying to turn what he’d done into an unfortunate misunderstanding.

He crouched toward me.

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

He glanced toward the hallway.

“The police. The hospital. Whoever comes.”

That was the moment everything became clear.

I wasn’t going to argue with him anymore. I wasn’t going to convince him that hurting a child was wrong. I was going to get my daughter and my father away from him.

I crawled beneath the desk, grabbed my phone, and called 911.

My husband lunged toward me.

That tiny interruption gave me enough time to back into the hallway and give the dispatcher our address.
