My husband hammered a nail into our 7-year-old daughter’s foot to force her to study instead of running, ignoring her bloody screams. When my father burst in to save her, my husband brutally smashed the heavy hammer into his head, leaving him bleeding on the floor.

I kept talking.

“My seven-year-old daughter is hurt. My father has been hit in the head. The person who did it is still here.”

The dispatcher told me officers and paramedics were coming.

My husband heard that and stopped advancing.

Then he started cleaning.

He picked up a book. Straightened the chair. Tried to move the hammer.

“Leave it there,” I said.

He ignored me.

That was when my daughter spoke from behind him.

He turned so quickly that she flinched.

I stepped between them.

She pointed toward the NAIL, then looked at her father.

His face changed.

Before she could answer, the sirens sounded outside.

I looked at my daughter trembling behind me and my father motionless on the bedroom floor.

“No,” I said. “You did.”

The first officer came through the door with paramedics behind him, and everything changed at once.

One team went to my father. Another knelt beside my daughter while the officer separated my husband from us.
