THE FACE THAT BROUGHT A FAMILY BACK TOGETHER: A SECOND CHANCE AT TRUST

Robert’s face tightened.

“He did try to contact you.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“He said he wrote.”

“He knew my number.”

“He told me you had blocked it.”

I remembered the night two weeks after Logan disappeared when I finally changed phones because the old account had been in his name.

“He could have found me.”

“I agree.”

The answer stopped me.

Robert wasn’t defending him.

“He could have done more,” he said. “He should have done more. Whatever fear or confusion he was experiencing, you deserved an explanation.”

I looked down at Ethan.

That mattered.

Not enough.

But it mattered.

“So where was he?”

Robert hesitated.

“Trying to become someone who could come back.”

I almost laughed.

“That sounds very noble.”

“It wasn’t.”

His tone remained calm.

“It was messy. And late. And probably unnecessary. Logan spent years believing that men in our family leave when they don’t know how to stay. He convinced himself that he had become me.”
