“He told you about me?”
“Yes.”
“And the baby?”
“Yes.”
My eyes burned.
“What did he say?”
Robert didn’t soften it.
“He said he had made the biggest mistake of his life.”
I looked away.
The words hurt more than I expected.
Not because they repaired anything.
They didn’t.
But because somewhere, while I had been learning to stop waiting for him, Logan had apparently understood what he had done.
“Then why didn’t he come back?”
“That,” Robert said quietly, “is the part I think Logan needs to explain himself.”
“I’m not asking Logan.”
“I understand.”
“No, I don’t think you do.”
My voice shook.
“I spent seven months wondering whether he was alive. Whether he hated me. Whether he had met someone else. Whether the moment I told him about this baby made me so easy to leave that I wasn’t even worth a phone call.”
